Instruments • Re: Steinberg XTC Alpha Juno emulation for HALion by Mortifer Instruments

My guess is that it's just sample based. They have simply sampled the pulse, saw, square and noise from the Alpha Juno Oscillators and built the instrument around those samples. Who knows they could have actually just sampled them from TAL Pha
Well, if you listen to the YouTube demo, the PWM sounds pretty convincing. And that seems like it requires something other than samples (to adjust the PWM amount and PWM LFO rate in real time). So that's why I think it's probably a wavetable of each oscillator waveform with the PWM amount increasing across the wavetable.

IMO, one of the best features of the Alpha Juno and MKS-50 is the sound of the PWM. It's very rich and fat. And you can apply PWM to all the waveforms, not just the square wave, which was pretty unusual for the time.

The analog chorus is another standout feature of all the Juno synths (as well as the JX-8P/MKS-70). It's a huge part of the sound. So if XTC uses the comparatively weak-sounding HALion chorus (even the Vintage Ensemble,) it is unlikely to sound authentic (at least for sounds with chorus). This is where I think TAL-Pha will beat XTC hands down. The TAL Chorus is probably the best Juno chorus emulation, IMO.
