Yes, there were separate, different RAMs. The hardware vintage music workstations architecture was the same as 1980s-early-1990s-microcomputers (simple CPU, DSP ASICs, separate RAMs for each).
Main RAM was for the firmware and OS.
DSPs (where synthesis happens) had their own additional DRAM for multisamples.
Buffering the ROM data in chunks in the DSP RAM was the only way, so I asked if there's any expert here (maybe some legendary engineer who personally did the magic back in the 1990s) who knows more than me about this aspects.
