Bitwig is undeniably a fantastic tool for generative music. But here’s the question: how many people in the real world are truly into generative music? What percentage of Bitwig users fall into that niche? I don’t have hard data, but from what I’ve observed, it’s not a significant number.
FTR, Im not here to pick a keyboard fight, im new to BW (6months roughly) and im genuinely interested in user opinions.
To make this clearer, let’s consider an ironic example—also from Bitwig. In an attempt to keep the interface usable in touch mode, they’ve redesigned some simple on/off buttons as dropdown menus. This decision adds an extra click for the vast majority of mouse users. Yet Bitwig chose to cater to the small minority of touchscreen users, possibly just 1%. It’s a very strange decision.
From this, it seems like Bitwig isn’t basing their choices on broad customer research. Instead, they appear to be developing the DAW to suit their own preferences or those within their office. Some might argue that this approach is ok. But to me, it feels like it narrows their vision to a fault.
And now, even Bitwig’s most loyal supporters are starting to ask: Where is Bitwig headed?
