If that's the impression, then it is born of what I was saying - a lot of people don't play their instruments, beyond hearing the sounds they make with them, so expressive features are often overlooked. You only have to look at how comparatively few presets on most softsynths bother to include velocity modulation or aftertouch, even when the synth supports those features. Realistically, a synth only needs velocity response to be capable of being as expressive as a piano. Common features like aftertouch, pitch bend and mod wheels actually make a synth more capable than a piano for expressive performance, people just don't tend to use synths in the same way they might use a piano.
