Generally, trying to hype something pre-launch is reacted to negatively by the prospective customers (if online feedback is indicative of the wider market - it may not be).
Customers get annoyed by marketing something with gushing superlatives (or even just a few vague screenshots) that isn't available. If you put up a teaser, it better be dropping within a day or two - longer than a week, and you've got people bitching about your lack of product before it's available to purchase.
Basically, it's not really done in this market these days because it doesn't work, unless you've perhaps got something truly groundbreaking - Melodyne's DNA technology was one such notable event. Those things are rare though...
