You are right, it doesn't open the mixer. In my setup the mixer is always open on its own screen, so that's why I didn't notice that. However, clicking the sequencer track DOES move the corresponding mixer-channel into view (when it is outside the mixer window, my projects are around 100 mixer-channels), and makes it blink the same as the mix-button on the rack does. So if you open the mixer window first (as you say, that's what you want), it does the same.No it doesn't. Clicking the button in the rack opens the mixer window.
